Peterborough's homes
Peterborough has some of the best century housing in Ontario. The Avenues, the Old West End and East City are full of brick homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s, with the plaster walls, old wiring and stone foundations that come with them. North and west of downtown, neighbourhoods such as Kawartha Heights and Northcrest have mid-century bungalows and split-levels, and the newer subdivisions on the city's edges have larger, younger houses ready for better kitchens and finished basements.
Additional residential units in Peterborough
Peterborough's rules for additional residential units changed with By-law 23-087, effective August 28, 2023. Most homes can now hold up to two additional units: two inside the house, or one inside and one in a detached building. The City also runs a pre-approved plans program for detached units, which speeds up the permit. Our Peterborough ARU guide covers the steps.
Lakefield and the lakes
North of the city, Lakefield and the Kawartha lakes are cottage country. Waterfront work on the Trent-Severn Waterway needs Parks Canada approval for in-water and shoreline work, and Otonabee Conservation or Kawartha Conservation regulates development near water and wetlands. Many lots are on wells and septic. We plan these approvals early because they set the timeline.
Lindsay and Kawartha Lakes
The City of Kawartha Lakes runs its own building department, and much of it is rural. Renovations, additions and new homes there often mean septic upgrades and wells, and Kawartha Conservation for anything near the lakes and rivers.
